This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

Innovation is critical to keeping a business alive and profitable. Mary and John Mark of Mark & Associates credit their litigation support firm's 20 years in business to ceaseless innovation. Their clients are attorneys who have a large case or are sole practitioners and need help reviewing, organizing and presenting their evidence.

In the early 1990s, the legal profession was mired in a "horse and buggy" approach to gathering evidence. It was typical to comb through hundreds of thousands of boxes and file cabinets looking for key facts. Mary and John knew technology could bring about revolutionary changes. They launched Salt Lake City-based Mark & Associates, with the idea of not only keeping abreast of technology advances but also of introducing their own time-saving methods.

Mary had decades of paralegal experience and John, exceptional computer technology and software programming skills. Working in combination with each other, the Marks introduced many time-saving devices, like new ways of storing and filing data electronically. They were among the first to embrace new videotaping presentation techniques in Utah's courtrooms. These methods not only saved attorneys time and money but also helped them win cases.

Today it's impossible to practice law without being technically savvy. Since most data is stored on computers, cell phones and other digital devices, electronic discovery is the new buzz word in law. Mark & Associates specializes in electronic discovery. Their services also include computer forensics, where incriminating data that appears to have been permanently deleted can be restored.

When law firms get overwhelmed with big cases, Mark & Associates has a team of experienced paralegals that can help dig them out. Known for their expertise in trial presentation, Mary and John say they've never encountered a problem that's too difficult to solve with the right technology.

For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
