PESARO, Italy, Aug 24, 2006 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Luciano Pavarotti, convalescing at his villa in Northern Italy, got a visit this week from an old friend, Irish rock star Bono.
The legendary operatic tenor and the U2 frontman have known each other for a decade, first performing together at a Pavarotti and Friends concert in 1995 to raise money for Bosnian refugee relief. Pavarotti joined U2 two years later on the band's single "Miss Sarajevo" and at a concert in Sarajevo in September.
Bono visited Pavarotti at his home near Pesaro Monday, the Italian news agency Ansa reported, but the news was only released Wednesday.
Placido Domingo, the Spanish tenor, reportedly also visited Pavarotti recently.
Pavarotti was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in July and went through surgery in New York. His wife and daughter are with him at the villa at Colle San Bartolo.
His last performance was at the Winter Olympics, where he sang "Nessun Dorma" at the opening ceremony. He has not ruled out occasional performances but plans to focus on directing and teaching.
