Sandra Yi Reporting Police are investigating after gunshots ring out in a Salt Lake City neighborhood overnight. A local rap artist was hit in the knee. Two people were taken into custody this morning, but their role in the shooting is still under investigation.
It happened just after midnight. The victim was in his driveway when two people went after him.
Steph Lucero, Neighbor: "It was really quiet. All of a sudden, you hear six shots, like firecrackers. It woke my mom and brother up completely from a dead sleep."
Steph Lucero was startled by what she saw outside. Her neighbor across the street had been shot.
Steph Lucero: "It looked like they carried him in the house from outside, and then the cops and them showed up, and we saw them take him out."
The 29-year old victim told police he had just gotten home after performing a rap concert, reportedly at the Urban Lounge.
Det. Joe Cyr, Salt Lake City Police Dept.: "There was nothing that raised suspicion at the club or as he was leaving the club."
But police say a red Toyota Camry followed the victim to his neighborhood. The man was unloading his car in the driveway when two people began shooting at him. Police say there were as many as nine gunshots.
No one else was hurt, but several rounds hit a neighbor's garage, and Steph Lucero saw small children at the victim's house.
Steph Lucero: "I have my nephew, and you never know. What if it had been in the middle of the day and the kids were outside playing?"
This morning, officers took two people into custody after the SWAT team surrounded their Salt Lake City apartment.
Det Joe Cyr: "Officers were watching a vehicle and an address here in this apartment complex."
Officers got a search warrant and found evidence in the apartment that appears to be related to the shooting. Lucero doesn't know the victim or his family, but says they aren't problem neighbors. She's anxious to know what happened.
Steph Lucero: "Totally rattled that anything like that would happen around here, because everyone around here is so quiet."
The motive for the shooting is still unknown. Gang detectives are involved in the investigation, but the victim told police he is not in a gang.
The two people in custody have not been arrested, so police aren't releasing their names.
