Richard Piatt reportingAn anti-drunk driving blitz paid off over the weekend. The blitz was part of an on-going effort to crack down on DUI's in this state.

Even after tougher laws, year after year, even after endless publicity, driving under the influence is still a big problem. That's why these DUI blitzes keep happening: Because they keep catching people.

Starting Friday, 45 police officers from six different departments saturated the roads. They were looking for people who are saturated with alcohol: At least to the point of the point-0-8 blood alcohol limit.

Utah DUI Blitz

  • 25 Arrests
  • 224 Warned
  • Sobriety Tests: 50
  • Other Stops: 231

Here are some results: 25 people are today facing DUI charges--arrested over the weekend, 224 people faced a warning, and 50 people were tested. There were dozens of people stopped for other safety reasons as well.

These kinds of crackdowns really matter to families who have lost a loved one because of a drunk driver.

The burnt out shell of a jeep is a stark reminder to the family of two young men -- hit by a drunk driver several years ago.

Debra Hudson, Nephew Killed by Drunk Driver: "We learned very fast that life is short. Never in a million years would I have guessed when I got that phone call, that my nephew had been killed by a drunk driver. "

So many families are dealing with that kind of emotion. That's why these crackdowns happen -- and why you can expect more over Labor Day weekend.
