This is Fred Ball for Zions Bank, speaking on business.

The Uintah Basin is home to a dynamic and thriving father and sons business. I was quite impressed as I sat in the office of Brad R. Haslem, president and CEO of BHI in Vernal. We were joined by his sons Erik, who is the chief financial officer, and Brett, the chief operating officer.

It was very obvious that the Haslem family is not only most capable at what they do, but also that they care about and appreciate each other. The company is a leader in the electrical, power design and instrumentation business. BHI is a full-service contract design and construction company serving the Western states in many areas. Over the past two decades, the company has become very recognizable.

The three family members work well together but Brad tells me that all 170 employees are also like family. Employees feel a sincere commitment to each client and are dedicated to recognizing their continued needs and concerns.

Brad initially thought he would like to be a mechanic but discovered quickly that he didn't like dirt falling in his face. He went to work for a friend in the electrical business and then worked for a couple of other electrical companies before he decided to become an entrepreneur and business owner. In 1998, he took the giant step and established BHI, which stands for Brad Haslem Incorporated.

The economy in the Uintah Basin is certainly robust and about 60 percent of BHI's business is related to the oil and gas industry. It's difficult to do, but Brad and Brett indicated that they have to sometimes turn business away. Projects and customers are located throughout the area, and BHI has a presence in Wyoming and Colorado.

The Haslems also have to be rated among the top Utah Jazz basketball fans in the state. They regularly make the five-hour round trip to attend home games.

For Zions Bank, I'm Fred Ball. I'm speaking on business.
