Part of the fun of going to the state fair is the food. We sent Lori Prichard to the Utah State Fair today to taste test some of that food, but it had to meet one of two criteria: It had to either be deep-fried or on a stick, which didn't turn out to be a difficult task.
Some go to the fair to ride the rides, others go for the food. So what's so great about the food? One woman told us, "It's a party in my mouth right now."
It's the Oreos, Twinkies and Snickers bars, all fried, that you could only get at the fair. If you go to eat, you shouldn't be counting calories.
One lady we saw gave the pork chop on a stick the thumbs up.
Others went to the fair to eat fried peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, which is hands down the main attraction. Dusty Erchanbrack, a South Summit High School teacher, said, "It does look strange. It has chocolate over the top and powdered sugar. It's pretty creative actually."
But is it good? I thought so, and so did my new friends. They said things like, "Actually, it's not bad," "It tastes like a doughnut," and "Yeah, like a filled doughnut." My new friends thought so too.
We asked the Provo native who thought up the concept what was he thinking? Jonathan Searle said, "About two years ago I developed my candy batter, and I really knew I had a hit because people love my batter. I just started sticking sticks on things and deep frying it, and it just seemed like the right thing to bring out this year."
And this year, it's a hit!
But be warned, your wallet will take a hit if you plan on feeding a family at the fair. For two sausages on a stick, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, a Twinkie, a Snickers, and an Oreo, all fried and on a stick, the pork chop, corn, grilled and fried shrimp, and cotton candy, I dished out $57.50. I ate it all, but had help from my photographer, Jay.
