MIDVALE — Criminal charges have been filed against two men accused of shooting two people, killing one and leaving the other paralyzed.

Jonathon William Rodgers, 28, and Chris James Bailey, 36, of Salt Lake City, were charged Monday in 3rd District Court with numerous felonies.

On Sept. 3, Deondre Baldwin was shot and killed at the Brighton Place Apartment Complex, 189 W. Plum Tree Lane (6905 South). A second man, Brenner Larson, 20, was critically injured. Larson's spine was severed and he "will be a paraplegic as a result of the gunshot wound," according to charging documents.

Police say Rodgers and Bailey went to the apartment demanding drugs. Rodgers got Baldwin and another woman out of bed at gunpoint while Bailey held Larson in a headlock and threatened to burn him with a butane torch, the charges state. Rodgers then allegedly shot both men.

Both men ran from the apartment but left a backpack behind. In it, detectives found multiple identification cards, some fake and some issued to Rodgers, according to the charges. A box of ammunition was also found in the backpack.

Rodgers was arrested in Ogden.

Rodgers was charged with aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder, aggravated burglary and aggravated robbery, all first-degree felonies; possession of a firearm by a restricted person and obstructing justice, second-degree felonies; and possession of a forgery device, a third-degree felony.

Bailey was charged with murder, discharge of a firearm with serious bodily injury, aggravated burglary and aggravated robbery, all first-degree felonies; aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a restricted person, third-degree felonies.

Rodgers already had a criminal case pending against him at the time of his arrest involving forgery and drug-related charges, according to court records. A warrant for his arrest was issued Aug. 24 for failing to show up for court. His next hearing for that case is scheduled for Thursday.

Bailey was convicted in federal court of an armed bank robbery in 2002 and was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison. He violated the conditions of his release and was sentenced to another year in federal prison in 2014, according to court records. His latest supervised release started in April of 2015.
