WOODS CROSS — A fire in Woods Cross on Friday that forced the evacuation of about eight homes caused $500,000 in damage, according to officials from the South Davis Metro Fire Agency.

The fire began Friday in a barn on a large property at 911 S. Redwood Road owned by the Kingston Family, a well-known polygamous sect, according to South Davis Metro Fire Chief Jeff Bassett.

Bassett said several people, including "quite a bit of kids," were evacuated.

The barn, two semitrailers, a van and the roof of a house were damaged in the fire. The barn — and the 40 tons of hay inside — were a total loss, he said.

It will take firefighters several days to pull the burnt hay out of the barn and make sure it's fully extinguished, according to Bassett.

"They have to spread it out thinly so they can extinguish it," he said. "If we don't spread it out thin, we're just going to pile it on and have another fire."

Investigators were still working Sunday to determine the cause of the fire but do not believe it was suspicious, he said.
