HALIFAX, Va. — I got pulled over for the first time this year.
In my 11 years of driving experience, I’ve never gotten a moving violation or been flagged down by a police officer. Even though I commute to and from Salt Lake City from Ogden five times a week, I’d avoided any brush with authority. If you know me, you know I’m very averse to breaking rules.
That streak came to an end this spring when I was pulled over on my way home from work, two blocks from my house after a weekend shift, when I got stopped on an empty street for rolling through a stop sign. Though no ticket was issued, it left me a little rattled. Everyone’s stomach drops when they pass a police car, even if they haven’t done anything wrong. Flashing lights in one's rearview mirror is one of the last things you want to see while driving.
In Halifax, Virginia, a few officers turned the usually unpleasant experience of being pulled over into a more delicious delay than usual. Luckily for us, they also got it all on this delightful video.
Police Chief Kevin Lands and officer Brian Warner pulled over cars on a hot day in Virginia, citing vehicle violation code 1.7.3.9, which states that “it’s actually against the law to drive on a hot day without an ice cream cone.”
The department workers said they were just hoping to put a smile on people’s faces with their initiative. I think it worked.
