LONDON (AP) — Buckingham Palace has released a new Annie Leibovitz portrait of Queen Elizabeth II to mark the celebrations of her 90th birthday.
The monarch is shown in a soft-toned image with her husband, Prince Philip, at Windsor Castle just after Easter. Both are smiling, but only just.
The queen, Britain's oldest and longest-reigning monarch, turned 90 on April 21. She usually celebrates her birthday privately, but this year's milestone served as the jumping off point for weeks of celebrations.
Her birthday will be marked officially — as usual — with the Trooping the Color ceremony Saturday.
A lunch on the Mall, the road leading to Buckingham Palace, will be held Sunday to celebrate the queen's patronage of 600 organizations, together with street parties and events around the country.
