SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A 21-year-old man was charged with causing a catastrophe, a Class A misdemeanor, for a small fire in the city's foothills he said was started accidentally by fireworks.

On July 2, the man told firefighters that he and friends set off fireworks and the sparks got caught "in a gust of wind" and started the fire, court documents allege.

The fire burned an area approximately the size of half a football field and cost more than $1,000 to extinguish.

The charge was filed Thursday in 3rd District Court.
