KANAB — Considered to be the "Little Hollywood" of Utah by many, Kane County is set to host a film "shootout" in March.
The annual event invites filmmakers to visit Kanab to create a short movie from scratch in just under 50 hours that features the southern Utah landscape. It will start March 16 at Parry Lodge, where participants will be given a theme and list of locations to include in their 5-minute film, according to event organizers.
"The shootout is the thunder dome of quick turnaround film challenges, and in addition to building on the film heritage of southern Utah, the competition provides aspiring filmmakers an opportunity to produce a film in the same place where film legends like John Ford and Clint Eastwood also worked," Kane County film commissioner Kelly Stowell said in a statement.
The first place winner of the Little Hollywood Shootout will receive $1,000. In 2015, the team behind "Timeless" snagged top honors. The short film started out in an old west setting, but took a turn for the supernatural.
Those interested in participating in the competition in the novice or professional divisions can register online. The films will all be screened at the Crescent Moon Theater, located at 150 S. 100 East in Kanab, at 7 p.m. on March 19 as part of the city's Shamrocks and Redrocks festival.
