SALT LAKE CITY — A man was arrested after allegedly kicking in an apartment door and getting into a fight with the couple living inside the unit Thursday.
Robert Cole Turner, 24, broke through the glass front door of an apartment building located near 200 North and Main Street at about 12:25 a.m., according to the Salt Lake City Police Department. After gaining entry to the building, he reportedly started banging on the doors of multiple apartments.
When he reached the last unit, police said Turner kicked in the door and forced his way inside an apartment that belongs to a married couple he does not know. The 35-year-old man living in the apartment confronted Turner when he came in, according to investigators. After a physical fight, the homeowner was able to hold Turner down until police arrived.
Both men were transported to the hospital after the altercation. Police said the apartment resident was treated for a "deep" bite sustained during the fight, while Turner received care for cuts on his arm that he sustained while breaking through the apartment building's glass door.
Salt Lake City police detective Veronica Montoya said anyone who hears pounding on their door in the middle of the night is more than welcome to call police so they can investigate before things escalate.
"It's always better for us to find out there was nothing going on than to wait for someone to physically get into their apartment," she said.
Turner was arrested on suspicion of robbery, burglary of a dwelling, aggravated assault and criminal mischief. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.
