LOS ANGELES (AP) — To say that the force is strong with this one isn't nearly enough. "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" has taken in a galactic $238 million over the weekend, according to studio estimates, making it the biggest North American debut of all time. It destroys the previous opening record set by "Jurassic World," which drew $208.8 million this summer.
JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military and Lebanese security officials say three rockets fired from Lebanon have landed in Israel. No damage or injuries have been reported. The rocket fire comes after a fighter from the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah (hez-BUH'-lah) was killed in an airstrike in Syria. Hezbollah says Israeli planes carried out the strike, and has vowed revenge. The dead militant, Samir Kantar, spent nearly 30 years in an Israeli prison before being returned to Lebanon in a controversial prisoner exchange.
ENCINITAS, Calif. (AP) — A fiery crash near the California-Mexico border has left three people dead. The California Highway Patrol says a driver sped the wrong way down a freeway for close to 40 miles before smashing into another car early today. Both cars burst into flames.
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — One person is dead after a Greyhound bus hit a car on a North Texas highway this morning. Police say the car crashed into a barrier and stalled on Interstate 30 in Arlington, then was hit by the bus. Police say a woman in the car was killed and 16 people on the bus suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.
NEW YORK (AP) — New York City's mayor and police commissioner are honoring two police officers who were shot to death one year ago while sitting in their cruiser. Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner Bill Bratton plan to dedicate a plaque today at Brooklyn's 84th Precinct, inscribed with the names of the slain officers. They will also lay a wreath at the intersection in Bedford-Stuyvesant where the shootings occurred on Dec. 20, 2014.
