WASHINGTON (AP) — A news report says Defense Secretary Ash Carter used a personal email account to do some of his government business during his first months at the Pentagon. The New York Times says that under the Freedom of Information Act it obtained 72 work-related emails that Carter sent or received from his personal email account.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Consumers and businesses will likely face modestly higher rates on some loans now that the Federal Reserve is raising interests rates after seven years of record lows. The Fed's move on Wednesday to lift its key rate by a quarter-point reflects its belief the economy has finally regained enough to withstand higher borrowing rates.
BALTIMORE (AP) —The judge in the mistrial of a Baltimore police officer charged in the death of Freddie Gray will meet Thursday with prosecutors and defense attorneys to talk about dates for a possible retrial. On Wednesday, the judge announced a hung jury in the manslaughter trial of William Porter. Gray suffered a broken neck in a police van while handcuffed and shackled.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — A federal judge has cleared the way for release of a video that shows a San Diego police officer fatally shooting an unarmed man. The judge says the family of Fridoon Nehad (ne-HOD') can release the video of the April shooting that they obtained in a wrongful-death lawsuit on condition that it not be shared. The district attorney has declined to prosecute the officer
WASHINGTON (AP) — A man who pleaded guilty to landing a gyrocopter on a lawn outside the U.S. Capitol as a political protest says he now wants to land a spot inside the building, as a member of Congress. Douglas Hughes of Ruskin, Florida, says he'll run against a Democrat. Hughes will be sentenced April 13. His lawyers say his guilty plea won't disqualify him from seeking office.
