SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake City Police are investigating after a menorah was stolen from a Jewish synagogue just before the start of Hanukkah, but they don't believe the prank is a hate crime.
Rabbi Benny Zippel of Chabad Lubavitch of Utah says the 6-foot menorah was missing when he arrived for services Sunday morning. Zippel says a couple out for a walk found the candelabrum leaning against the alumni house at a nearby college.
The rabbi says he agrees with police that the theft was insensitive but not meant to be anti-Semitic. He told KUTV that he believes the perpetrators were "bored souls" looking for something to do.
The menorah has been displayed at the synagogue during Hanukkah since 2005. It was vandalized two years ago but the vandals were not caught.
