Historic fish food factory destroyed by fire

A suspicious fire destroyed an old commercial building on Saturday, impeding TRAX traffic in and out of downtown.

Heavy smoke billowing from the building, located at 4800 S. 300 West, could be seen throughout the valley from about 9:30 a.m. The old fish food factory, built in the early 1900s, was a total loss, said Murray Deputy Fire Marshal Pat Killion.

Group protests LDS policy on same-sex marriage and children

A group of about 50 gay rights supporters held a peaceful protest Sunday at Temple Square, voicing their opposition to new policies issued by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints regarding same-sex couples and their children.

On Thursday, the church released an updated handbook for lay leaders of Mormon congregations mandating church discipline for same-sex couples who marry and prohibiting their children from receiving baby blessings or being baptized until they reach age 18.

Provo couple's pit bulls shot with BB gun

A Provo couple is looking for answers Sunday after finding injuries on their pit bulls they believe were intentional.

Andre and Heidi Pepinos found a BB shot lodged in one of their dogs' heads after a two-week-old scab came off, revealing the round.

The couple originally noticed the wounds when they occurred, but thought they were the result of the 2-year-old pit bulls — Bane and Tank — play fighting in their fenced backyard. They know now that the dogs were shot with a BB gun. In addition to the BB that came out of Bane, they said Tank's wound feels like there is a BB lodged in it as well.

'Beautiful partnership' provides home makeover for refugee mom and kids

Born in a refugee camp in Rwanda, Cosette Biyanke learned early in life about the worst of mankind after experiencing the horrors of civil war.

Many years later and some 9,000 miles from her family's homeland of Burundi, Biyanke and her two children started life anew in Salt Lake City in 2014 after being resettled in Virginia in 2010.

JP Gibson stays busy since finishing cancer treatment

It's been more than a year since 6-year-old JP Gibson signed a one-night contract with the Utah Jazz and six months since he took his last chemotherapy pill.

Since then, the acute lymphoblastic leukemia survivor has been busy with kindergarten, soccer, three dance classes and soon, basketball.

No. 13 Utah leans on defense for 34-23 win over Washington

Utah finally forced some more turnovers to remain in control of the Pac-12 South Division race with three weeks left in the regular season.

Don't count out the No. 13 Utes just yet from getting back into the College Football Playoff conversation.

Gionni Paul returned a fumble 54 yards for a touchdown, set up another score with an interception and No. 13 Utah held off Washington 34-23 on Saturday night.

BYU tops San Jose State 17-16 when 2-point attempt fails

Tanner Mangum tied a BYU record for touchdown passes for a freshman and San Jose State failed on a two-point conversion attempt with 45 seconds to play and the Cougars held on to beat the Spartans 17-16 on Friday night.

San Jose State marched 85 yards in 10 plays, the last a 6-yard sweep by quarterback Kenny Potter. The Spartans (4-5) immediately lined up for the two-point PAT but Tyler Ervin's halfback pass was just out of reach of Billy Freeman with BYU's Michael Wadsworth in tight coverage.

New Mexico edges Utah State 14-13

David Anaya is one of those home-state players that toils beyond the limelight for New Mexico.

But Saturday, he shone brightly in the Lobos' 14-13 victory over Utah State on Saturday.

Missouri football players pressure school leaders over race, game vs. BYU in question

Student protests over racial incidents at the University of Missouri escalated over the weekend when at least 30 black football players announced they will not participate in team activities until the university system's president is removed.

President Tim Wolfe gave no indication he has any intention of stepping down, but agreed in a statement Sunday that "change is needed" and said the university is working to draw up a plan by April to promote diversity and tolerance.
