Keith McCord ReportingIf you were driving down South Temple this morning, you sort of took a journey back in time. A whole bunch of handcarts and folks dressed in pioneer-era clothes were marching westward!
The July 24th anniversary of the pioneers coming to the valley is just around the corner, so the folks at LDS Business College decided to use that theme to move to its new location.
It was moving day at Salt Lake's LDS Business College with students, faculty, alumni and friends all lending a helping hand. Items from the college library were loaded into boxes and then into twelve handcarts for a symbolic move.
Louise Brown, Move Organizer: "It's a lot of fun today. It's a great mix of the past, the present and the future. And that's our concept, is to bring the past to the future."
Dressed in pioneer attire or just shorts and some good shoes, more than 100 people paraded down South Temple, on route to the school's new home at the Triad Center.
Carrying thousands of books and library furniture, the handcart company had a police escort and a happy disposition. But, as with the origional pioneers, this trek was not without its mishaps and equipment problems.
Stephen Woodhouse, President of LDS Business College: "We started out with 12 handcarts. We lost one along the way. So I guess that's reminiscent of what really happened on the trail."
The handcart moving crew made a stop at the reflective pond on the Main Street Plaza, where a brief history of the college was discussed before moving on to the next half of the trip.
"We're just going to stop here for a minute and reminisce some of our past history. And then we'll move on to the future. And we've got a great future."
LDS Business College has resided at 411 East South Temple for 43 years. The ten-story building at Triad is double the size of the old campus, which will also house the BYU Salt Lake campus.
For the handcart group today, those improvements and the sight of their new campus are things to be excited about.
"We have arrived, we are here. This is the right place."
The LDS Business College has been moving things all this week. Today's trek was just a fun and symbolic way to get things done.
LDS Business College will be open at its new location this Fall for classes.
