(KSL News) -- A former US Postal Service carrier will serve 500 hours community service for dumping several thousand pieces of mail.
That's one hour for every first-class letter he tossed.
Authorities say Brad Smith dumped letters and other pieces of mail in a church trash can for nearly five months last year, while working as a postal carrier in Lehi.
A janitor discovered the trashed mail and notified the post office.
Post office officials say all customers received their mail.
Smith's attorney says his client took the job temporarily to support his wife and five children and, "just got overwhelmed."
