Sam Penrod reporting Fire broke out at an art studio located behind the main Thanksgiving Point properties this afternoon. The fire caused serious damage to the building and to some of the artwork inside.

Firefighters got a call to the studio just before 2:00 Sunday afternoon. The smoke and flames from inside the studio were quickly extinguished, but the fire had already spread to the ceiling, which made it difficult for firefighters to put out the fire. Fire departments in nearby Saratoga Springs and American Fork were called to help battle the fire in the ceiling.

Most of the damage was to wooden rafters in the attic. Right now, investigators are looking at a kiln in the studio to see if that caused the fire.

Capt. Robert Stanley of the Lehi Fire Department said, "There is a kiln in there, but we're not even sure if that was even on at the time or what the source of this fire could be. We'll have our investigators look at it after we've cleaned up here."

Numerous panels of art glass created at this studio are headed to the new LDS temple in Draper. Firefighters were able to save the glasswork. Most of the damage to the studio and the artwork is from water and smoke. An exact dollar figure on the damage has not been determined.

The studio owner told us the fire would have been devastating to his business if all of the artwork had been destroyed. He credits a fire and smoke alarm which was recently installed in the studio.
