Marc Giauque and Associated Press reportingA train crashed into a Jeep in Davis County, the first collision since FrontRunner began operating in April. The accident happened at 900 S. Main St.

Layton police say it happened when the driver tried to cross over a barrier, hoping to get onto a closed I-15 ramp.

His front wheel got stuck on the track. The crossing arms came down, and a southbound train made contact. The train had just departed the Layton station around midnight Tuesday and was not moving at top speed.

UTA spokeswoman Carrie Bohnsack-Ware says there were just a few passengers on the train, which had some scratches. The Jeep's passenger side was badly damaged. Damage to the train was minimal.

Police say there's been concern over the intersection in the past. But they say it's actually better now with new signs and curbs. They say the crash will likely generate new discussions about the intersection, but they don't know how it can be made safer.

Meanwhile, Layton police were at the intersection on Wednesday afternoon, stopping people who were making illegal U-turns to get around the construction detour.
