GENEVA (AP) — Secretary of State John Kerry could be laid up for a while after breaking his leg in a bicycle crash near Geneva. The accident has forced Kerry to cut short a four-nation trip. He'll fly back to the United States on a plane equipped with medical equipment. The injury could affect other potential trips, such as one to the Cuban capital to raise the flag at a restored U.S. Embassy.
HOUSTON (AP) — Preliminary damage estimates from flooding in the Houston area put the cost at $45 million or more. Harris County emergency management officials say the floods in the past week caused more than $25 million in damage to public utilities and infrastructure. The cost to remove storm debris is estimated at $15 million. About 1,500 homes in the county have some level of flood damage.
CHICAGO (AP) — A major study could change care for many of the hundreds of thousands of people each year who have cancer that spreads to the brain from other sites. Doctors found that contrary to conventional wisdom, radiation therapy to the whole brain did not improve survival, and it harmed memory, speech and thinking skills. The findings suggest that less care can improve quality of life. The study is being discussed today at a cancer conference in Chicago.
SOMERVILLE, Mass. (AP) — Police say two young Boston men have been stabbed in the neck, one seriously, at a Tufts University fraternity house. Somerville police say a "person of interest" is being sought and there is no threat to the surrounding community. He says the people involved know each other. The incident prompted Tufts to issue a shelter-in-place order for about three hours early today.
NEW YORK (AP) — New York City authorities now say 10 people have suffered minor injuries in a crane accident. A piece of mechanical equipment being lifted by a crane at a Manhattan office building broke free and fell about 28 stories to the sidewalk below, shearing the side of the building along the way. The mayor says two of the injured were construction workers while the other eight were pedestrians and occupants of a car passing by.
