SALT LAKE CITY — An Ogden man who fired a gun at federal agents last fall will spend more than 12 years in a prison.
Lorenzo Puentes, 38, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court Thursday to assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. Judge Dee Benson sentenced him to 150 months in prison.
The U.S. Marshals' Violent Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team tracked Puentes, who had an outstanding arrest warrant for a weapons violation, to a home in Ogden last November. During the evening, Puentes stepped outside to smoke a cigarette and encountered three deputy marshals who identified themselves as police officers, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for Utah.
Puentes fired one shot from a handgun toward the deputies and ran. The shot lodged into a fence that some officers were standing behind. No one was injured, and the agents did not return fire. Officers apprehended Puentes a block from the home.
