SALT LAKE CITY — A man arrested earlier this week after allegedly firing a shot at U.S. marshals now faces federal charges.

Lorenzo Puentes, 37, was charged in federal court Friday with assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon and using a firearm during a violent crime.

On Tuesday, The U.S. Marshals' Violent Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team — which includes members of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives — tracked Puentes, who was wanted for probation violation, to a home in Ogden, 1066 28th St.

While agents watched the house, Puentes stepped outside to smoke, according to charging documents. That's when the marshals nearby called out to him and identified themselves.

"Puentes raised his right arm, pointed a handgun at the deputies and discharged one round toward deputies," charges state.

The shot lodged into a fence that some of the officers were standing behind, according to the report. No one was injured, and the marshals did not return fire.

Puentes ran after firing the shot, police said. He was surrounded and captured about a block later and arrested without further incident.

If convicted in federal court, Puentes could be sentenced to 20 years in prison for assault on a federal officer, and life in prison for firing a weapon during a violent crime with a 10-year mandatory minimum sentence.

He also faces charges in state court.
