LOGAN — A 68-year-old Smithfield man was impaled and killed Saturday after the pickup truck he was driving crashed through a fence.

David Ottley was traveling north on U.S. 89/91 shortly before 3 p.m. when his Toyota crossed into the southbound lanes near 3100 South and veered off the road, police say.

According to witnesses, the truck narrowly missed hitting another vehicle before it ran into a fence and vaulted into a nearby field. Upon impact, a pole went through the one of the vehicle's headlights, the engine bay and the firewall before impaling Ottley in the abdomen.

Witnesses say Ottley was alert when emergency personnel arrived at the scene, but he lost consciousness before he was transported to Logan Regional hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

According to police, it appeared to some witnesses that Ottley may have been unconscious before leaving the road.

Investigation of the accident is underway, and the cause of death will be determined by a medical examiner, said Troy Thurston with the Logan City Police Department.
