SALT LAKE CITY — Murder charges were filed Wednesday against a third suspect in the shooting death of a longtime and beloved clerk at the Lee Mart convenience store, but the new charges don't answer questions of who killed David Marsh.
Juan Andres Zalazar, 23, of Taylorsville, was charged with murder and aggravated robbery, both first-degree felonies, in 3rd District Court.
Alexis Alan Garcia, 20, and Martin Castillo, 19, were charged with murder and aggravated robbery last week. The three men are accused of entering the convenience store, 5909 S. 700 West, in the early morning hours of March 18 and demanding cash from Marsh at gunpoint.
Court documents still haven't explicitly specified who the suspected shooter or shooters are.
Marsh, 62, threw the empty cash register tray at the suspects as they fled, at which point one of the men allegedly turned around and fatally shot him. Court documents show Marsh sustained two gunshot wounds.
Two suspects, whose faces were concealed by bandanas and hats, can be seen on surveillance footage leaving the store. Police have said Garcia was the first through the door frame and that he touched it as he left, leaving his fingerprints.
Charging documents indicate the second man to leave the store, who was hit by the cash register, was the one who shot Marsh.
Castillo gave conflicting accounts to a family member about who fired the shots, according to charging documents. He originally claimed Garcia shot Marsh, but later said he and Garcia each fired once, charges state.
Castillo later told police that he remained in a getaway vehicle while Garcia and Zalazar went inside, according to the charges. He also reportedly said Garcia told him he shot the clerk and that Zalazar reported being hit by the cash register tray.
Police originally reported Zalazar was the shooter.
Castillo told police Zalazar and Garcia "gave (him) some money and told him to remain quiet," charging documents state.
The three men allegedly visited several convenience stores on the morning of the killing before deciding to rob Lee Mart.
