After five seasons behind the bench, Anthony Levrets was relieved Sunday of his duties as University of Utah women’s basketball coach by athletic director Chris Hill, per a press release from the school.

The Utes’ season, one where they finished with a 9-21 overall record and a 3-15 mark within the Pac-12, ended Thursday at the conference tournament. This was the second disappointing season in a row under Levrets after the Utes went 12-19 overall and just 4-14 in the Pac-12 in the 2013-14 season.

“We appreciate the effort Coach Levrets put into our program, but we feel as though we need a change in direction,” said Hill. “Our women’s basketball program has achieved great success throughout its history and we are committed to its continued success.”

Levrets had achieved success with the program as recently as 2012-13, when the Utes went 23-14 overall (8-10 in the Pac-12) and reached the WNIT title game. He also posted a winning season in his first with the program as an interim coach in 2010-11, leading Utah to a Mountain West Conference title and a berth in the NCAA tournament. He was retained as full-time head coach following that season.

Prior to his head coaching appointment, Levrets served as an assistant coach with Utah for three years. He arrived after five years as an assistant for Southern Oregon University’s men’s basketball team, and also served as SOU’s director of recruiting, player development and scouting. Prior to this, he was a player/coach for a Japan Division I club team. He began his coaching career at Lane Community College and also served under coaching legend Gordie James at Willamette from 1999-2001.

A national search will be conducted for Levrets’ replacement.
