BEIRUT (AP) — There's skepticism from both Jordan and the United States over a claim by Islamic State extremists that an American aid worker held hostage by the group was killed Friday in a Jordanian airstrike in northern Syria. Jordan labels the claim "criminal propaganda" and the U.S. says there's no corroborating evidence. The woman was identified as Kayla Jean Mueller.
DENVER (AP) — A long day of emotional testimony ended when Colorado lawmakers rejected a so-called death with dignity bill. More than 100 people testified one way or another. Doctors who opposed the measure said allowing dying patients to seek life-ending medications closed off the possibility of a recovery when a prognosis is wrong. The state House committee voted 8-5 against the bill.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Six dry weeks in the San Francisco Bay Area are ending with a storm sweeping down the West Coast that triggered flooding in Washington state and unleashed hurricane-force winds in Nevada. At least a half dozen homes were swamped. Up to 10 inches of rain expected in parts of the region won't make a significant dent in California's historic drought.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The latest escalation by companies that handle billions of dollars of cargo at West Coast seaports has increased concerns about a full port shutdown next week in a labor dispute with dockworkers. The association representing port terminal operators announced its members would not hire crane drivers to move containers on and off massive ocean-going ships. The ports handle about one-quarter of the nation's international trade — about $1 trillion in commerce annually.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Investigators now believe five different tech workers may have been compromised by hackers, facilitating the theft of millions of health insurance records from Anthem Inc. Investigators say it could have been some kind of "phishing" scheme that could have tricked a worker into revealing a password or downloading malicious software. Officials say the hackers may have been inside the system since December.
