SALT LAKE CITY — When it comes to winter sports, it’s hard to think of options other than skiing and snowboarding; especially with Utah having “the best snow on earth.” However, not participating in these two popular activities doesn’t necessarily mean winter will only bring hibernation. Below is a list of several other options Utah has to offer.

Indoor sports activities

Rock climbing

One sport that is quickly growing throughout Utah is indoor climbing. Indoor climbing gyms offer different aspects of climbing to the community. Ranging from top roping, bouldering and lead climbing, climbers of all levels can engage in this thrilling sport. There are several indoor climbing gyms in Utah, making it easily accessible to those wanting to give it a try. Universities like Utah Valley University and the University of Utah have newly built climbing walls, creating an approachable environment for students.

Soccer league

Indoor soccer leagues offer a great experience for groups to gather together throughout the year. Participating as a team comes with the opportunity to move on to a tougher league, possibly leading to a semi-pro league. No team? No problem. Indoor soccer leagues offer sign-ups and will help place individuals on open teams.

“The leagues are nice here because there are different levels of competition," said Bailey White, a University of Utah senior. "They’re willing to work with your schedule and it’s fairly inexpensive.”

Ultimate FrisbeeAnother cardio-based sport that can be played during the cold season is ultimate Frisbee. Players can play through the winter with leagues starting this January. Teams consist of a variety of individuals from new players to experienced college students. Like the indoor soccer leagues, ultimate Frisbee leagues can place individuals looking to play on a team. Alternative outdoor sports activities

Snowshoeing

Participating in snowshoeing is a great way to capture the beauty of Utah during the winter season. According to a href="http://www.snowshoemag.com/first-timers/" rel="nofollow">Snowshoe Magazine, snowshoeing is quickly growing in popularity throughout the United States.

Getting started is less expensive than most snow sports, and it’s easy to learn. In addition, the risk of injury is low for participants. There are many groomed trails ready to be explored throughout the Wasatch Back. Many tours are given in Park City, with guides provided.

Ice climbing

Leaning towards more extreme sports, ice climbing is one that provides the excitement for an adrenaline junkie. Ice climbing requires a lot more technique because of the extremely dangerous situations that can occur during the climb. In addition to having the correct gear, understanding ice conditions is essential for a safe climb.

Ice climbing can be done in many different counties throughout Utah. Popular locations such as Little Cottonwood Canyon and Ogden Canyon are an ice climber’s paradise. Clinics are offered for beginning climbers, and guides are recommended for the first couple of outings.

Sledding/tubing

For a snow activity that doesn’t require traveling outside of the city, sledding allows for some winter fun for all ages. With some proper layering and a sled/tube, the hills in several parks offer a great ride. Enjoyutah.org provides a list of parks in each county that permits sledding.

You can leave the hibernation behind this winter season with these available activities. Utah has got you covered from peak to valley in activities for those of us without lift passes.
