PARLEYS CANYON — Utah Highway Patrol said weather and speed were factors in a deadly crash overnight in Parleys Canyon. And, troopers are cautioning motorists after a witness to a crash was nearly hit.
Just before 11 p.m. Monday, two cars westbound on I-80 near 4100 East slid off the road and landed in a ditch, according to UHP Sgt. Chamberlin Neff. He said a woman pulled over, parked her SUV on the right shoulder of the road, got out of her vehicle to check on the two cars when a third vehicle lost control and slammed into her car.
"This woman was very fortunate that she didn’t actually get hit by the vehicle. She stated to us that she was within a foot of getting hit by this Acura, and that was a tremendous amount of luck on her part,” Neff said.
He said even though the woman was trying to help, she did the wrong thing.
“If you do see someone on the side of the road, call 911 and do not stop. Do not get out of your car like this woman did,” he warned.
A man in his 50s was driving the Acura which narrowly missed the woman. He died upon impact, Neff said. The deceased's name has not been released.
No one else involved in either accident was injured, Neff said.
