SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A former TV pitchman in Utah known for his over-the-top personality has been released from custody after being disruptive and combative in court. Dell Schanze had an initial hearing on allegations that he chased a barn owl on his motorized paraglider. He eventually pleaded not guilty to charges of knowingly using an aircraft to harass wildlife and pursuing a migratory bird.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Safety inspectors say mechanics had worked on the main rotor of a helicopter and were taking it for a test flight when the rotor came off and the chopper crashed into a building near Salt Lake City. The National Transportation Safety Board has released a brief preliminary report about the crash that killed two men Dec. 2.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Prosecutors say a 35-year-old former Utah high school teacher facing rape and sexual abuse charges had sex with another underage student. A judge scheduled a new evidentiary hearing this week in the case of Brianne Altice, who prosecutors now say had a third teenage victim. Altice's attorney did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah's Snow College is getting a new leader. Gary Carlston has served as the school's interim president since January, and the Utah Board of Regents has announced his appointment as president in his own right. Carlston is also a native of Sanpete County, where the Snow College is located, and has served on its board of trustees.
