SOUTH SALT LAKE — Police said Tuesday morning that two girls who went missing Sunday night were located safe and well.

McKenzey Madill, 12, and Satara Bylsma, 15, both returned to homes of relatives early Tuesday morning, South Salt Lake police said in a release.

The two girls walked away from the Salt Lake County Juvenile Girl’s Youth Home Sunday night around 10 p.m. They may have crawled through a window. The home is an unsecured facility that cares for girls who have allegedly been abused or neglected at home.

The endangered missing advisory issued for Madill due to her age and the cold weather, was cancelled after she turned up at her grandparents’ home in West Valley City around 12 a.m., according to police.

Bylsma arrived about the same time at her parents’ house.

Investigators believe someone gave the two girls a ride and dropped them off at the homes. South Salt Lake police officer Gary Keller did not know Tuesday whether the people who gave rides to the two girls faced potential charges or even whether the two young girls themselves would face any potential charges for running away.

For now, Keller said, the girls are still in state custody, and even though they have not been charged, they were moved from the youth home to the more secure Salt Lake County Juvenile Detention Center.
