KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • U. Health launched the Nest Intensive Outpatient Program to address mothers who need mental health care.
  • The program is designed for mothers who have experienced mental health issues during or after pregnancy or in other reproductive life stages.

SALT LAKE CITY — A mother's mental health affects the entire family, Dr. Rana Jawish said, so providing them with the support needed to thrive can improve well-being for their families and the community.

The Huntsman Mental Health Institute just opened a new outpatient program that is focused on perinatal and reproductive mental health — the Nest Intensive Outpatient Program.

"This program grew out of the recognition that an entire generation has been struggling with their emotional and mental health," Jawish explained.

Program participants will meet three days each week from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Huntsman Mental Health Institute at the University of Utah campus. During that time, patients will have individual therapy, expressive therapy and medication management in family-friendly rooms. There is a virtual participation option when needed.

"No matter where you are in your pregnancy or parenting journey, you don't have to navigate this experience alone. ... You and your family deserve care that recognizes the weight of this moment and meets you with clinical excellence, genuine warmth and deep compassion," Jawish said.

The program is available for anyone whose mental health has been affected by pregnancy, childbirth, pregnancy loss, parenting, reproductive transitions or other related trauma, according to a U. Health statement. It says the community has a growing need for "specialized, structured care."

Intensive outpatient programs like this one are designed for people who need more support than outpatient care typically provides, but do not require hospitalization.

"Participants in the program build resilience, connection, and long-term coping skills within a compassionate, supportive environment where their experiences are heard, validated and respected. The program typically runs eight to 10 weeks, offering targeted care during periods of heightened need," according to the statement.

For more information about the program, which does not require a referral, or further information about postpartum depression, U. Health's Perinatal team can be reached at 801-585-1565.
