(KSL News) -- A coast to coast convoy left Salt Lake this morning, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the interstate system.
The convoy pays tribute to a cross-country trip by Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1919. The difficulty of that journey inspired the idea for an interstate system, and when Eisenhower became president he signed legislation that made the system possible.
More than 20 Utah Highway Patrol troopers lead the convoy out of Sugarhouse Park and back on the road.
Even Governor Huntsman took a moment to appreciate the history of the highway.
