CHILLICOTHE, Ohio (AP) — A southern Ohio hospital is postponing surgeries as it investigates apparent staining found on surgical towels that had gone through sterilization equipment.
Adena Medical Center in Chillicothe (chihl-ih-KAWTH'-ee) put all elective surgeries on hold after the staining was spotted by surgical team members Wednesday.
A hospital spokeswoman tells the Chillicothe Gazette (http://ohne.ws/1oBDk2V ) that emergency patients who can withstand being moved are being taken elsewhere until the problem is resolved.
Adena's chief medical officer says the source of the staining wasn't biological. A representative from the sterilizer manufacturer is working with the hospital, which is about 40 miles south of Columbus.
Hospital officials say the facility's instrumentation is passing quality standards but they're taking the extra precautions to protect patient safety.
