Since retiring, Shari Gowers of Ivins is showing no signs of slowing down. “Two days before I retired from a whole lifetime of working, I had watched too many people, too many friends that had got to retirement and then couldn’t enjoy it because of their health. I didn’t want to be that person. I didn’t want to go to the rocking chair.” Gowers says she wanted to enjoy life and do the things she’s always wanted to do. After many unsuccessful attempts working with personal trainers, Gowers turned to Intermountain Healthcare’s “Fit for Life” program as a last-ditch effort.

Manager Trevor Smith of the Live Well Center in St. George says the program offers a whole-person wellness approach. “We’re able to offer state of the art, evidence-based assessments for body composition, resting metabolic rates, performance testing and functional fitness testing to get individuals on an exercise program or wellness path that would really fit within their lifestyle and needs.” After the initial assessment, clients are prescribed an individualized program to meet personal milestones and goals. Smith says St. George has a growing older adult community that needs programs that the Live Well Center offers. “Physical activity and wellness is really the No. 1 indicator to longevity. We tend to think as we get older, we’re just going to get older and that’s the life we have to live. That’s not so at any age.”

After 18 months of attending the “Fit for Life” class two times a week, walking on the treadmill every day and golfing about once a week, Gowers says her body feels stronger than ever before. “It’s all come together to make me a totally different person. A year and a half later I’m still there, and that’s because they continually motivate us and it’s just a great place to start no matter what your level is. This is my vehicle to get more healthy so I can enjoy the fun part of my life."

There are three Live Well Centers, St. George, Park City and in Salt Lake City. Visit www.intermountainlivewell.org or call the center closest to you to set up an initial appointment.
