PROVO — A second Provo resident got on NBC’s “The Voice,” joining Team Usher for the show.

Tanner James, 19, joined Team Usher with Madilyn Paige, also of Provo, on this week’s episode.

James said he did not discover his love of singing until he was a junior at Timpview High School. After joining the school’s choir, his parents heard him sing and encouraged him to continue.

“I didn’t think I would really share that with anyone,” James said.

James, who describes his music as a blend of acoustic, soulful and pop, went on to win the Vocal Sport competition and study vocal performance at Snow College under Dr. Steve Meredith.

“The reaction I got from my peers was awesome, definitely a confidence booster,” James said. “The feeling you get singing on the stage, I got addicted to it.”

He learned to sing all kinds of genres, stretch his voice and — though he didn’t expect it — get ready for “The Voice” audition.

“As he did more performances on my own, I started realizing the deeper places music could bring you,” he said.

Now that he’s on Team Usher, he said he is excited to push his music even further.

“He really knows what he’s doing for sure. Some of his comments have been he wants to help me bring out my real voice,” James said.

While being on TV is glamourous, James said he has been touched by all the support his hometown has extended.

“It’s so awesome to have all of Utah behind me,” he said.

Follow his progress on "The Voice" on Mondays and Tuesdays at 8/7 central and on James' Twitter.
