SALT LAKE CITY — If you love mountain biking but still want the comforts of city life, Salt Lake City is one of the best places to live, according to a new list.

Salt Lake City was named one of the top 10 mountain bike cities in Northern America by mountain biking website Singletracks. Editors selected their favorite cities from the top 100 metropolitan statistical areas in the U.S. and Canada.

"While we all love to dream about shredding the best mountain bike destinations in North America, the sad fact is that most of us will only ever get to visit those places … and we have to live somewhere else to pay the bills," wrote Editor in Chief Greg Heil. "So if you can’t spend 365 days per year riding in a world-class MTB destination, your local trails should at least be respectable."

Utah seems to be a favorite of the Singletracks team. Moab and Park City made the mountain biking website's previous list of the top 10 mountain bike destinations in North America.

Editors cited the accessibility of numerous mountain biking trails from Salt Lake City for its appearance on the list of best cities.

"There’s more to Salt Lake City mountain biking than the Wasatch Crest Trail," the editors wrote. "While that ride is a classic one, there are others, like the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, that can be accessed right from downtown SLC. The most popular section of the trail starts at Hogle Zoo and goes all the way to City Creek Canyon. Plus, there are also northern and southern sections of the trail extending as far south as Draper and as far north as Ogden."

They also referenced the Pipeline Trail in Millcreek and opportunities to ride in Big Spring Hollow and Big Cottonwood Canyon.

The top 10 mountain bike cities in Northern America:

  • Los Angeles
  • Boston
  • Phoenix
  • Vancouver, B.C.
  • San Jose, Calif
  • Salt Lake City
  • Albuquerque
  • Colorado Springs, Colo.
  • Augusta, Ga.
  • Chattanooga, Tenn.
