MILLCREEK — SWAT teams took a 19-year-old man into custody Monday evening after police say he fired a shotgun at his mother's car and then barricaded himself inside a home for about three hours.
Police were called to the house at 700 E. Empire Avenue at around 3:40 p.m. on a report of shots fired, Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said.
When officers arrived, Jacob McGrath's mother told them her son was angry that a 21-year-old was being allowed to live in a shed on the property, Hoyal said.
As the mother was leaving to take the 21-year-old to a TRAX station, McGrath allegedly came out of the house and fired a shotgun at the vehicle.
The 21-year-old inside fled on foot, Hoyal said. Neither he nor McGrath's mother was hurt.
Hoyal said police tried "several methods to communicate with the suspect in this case," but ultimately had to call the SWAT team in.
People who live in the neighborhood were advised to stay inside their homes.
McGrath surrendered peacefully about 7:15 p.m. He was booked into Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated assault, criminal mischief and discharging a weapon within city limits.
