CARBON COUNTY — The Carbon County Sheriff’s Office took a man into custody Saturday after he said he “would not be taken alive” during a high-speed chase.

Deputy Isaiah Palmer tried to stop a speeding vehicle driven by Price resident Nicholas Taylor, 24, on SR 6 just east of Price on Saturday, Deputy Tom Stefanoff said in a written release from the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office.

Taylor would not yield and continued driving toward Wellington.

The Wellington Police Department responded to assist Palmer in the vehicle pursuit. They set tire spikes in the road and the front left tire of the pursued vehicle was flattened. However, Taylor continued in the vehicle for a few miles before stopping and fleeing on foot toward the Wood Hill area, Stefanoff said.

Sometime during the vehicle pursuit, Taylor called 911 and told operators that “he was in possession of an AK-47 rifle and he would not be taken into custody alive,” Stefanoff said.

Law enforcement from Price, Helper City, Utah Highway Patrol and the Adult Probation and Parole department assisted in the continued pursuit of Taylor. The Carbon County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team was also activated because Taylor told police he was in possession of a weapon.

A Carbonville resident called police, reporting he had seen a man running through a field near the Price River.

“A team of law enforcement officers quickly surrounded the area and the suspect was quickly apprehended,” Stefanoff said. “Thanks to the team work of the law enforcement agencies involved, the suspect was safely taken into custody and no citizens or officers were injured in this incident."

Stefanoff said Taylor had stolen a vehicle from the Tony Basso GM car lot shortly before Palmer attempted to stop Taylor for speeding.
