KEARNS — Police have arrested a Kearns man who they say beat his father because he could "get away with it."

Unified police were called to 5046 S. Colter Circle (5410 West) Friday on a report that a 67-year-old man was unable to move because of several injuries, including possible broken ribs and a broken right hip.

Investigators were told the victim had been in a fight with his son, Lamar "Buzz" Bowman, 49, according to a Salt Lake County Jail report. A third party who tried to intervene was also attacked by Bowman, police said.

After he was taken to the VA Hospital, doctors discovered that the father was "covered" in cuts and bruises, all in various stages of healing. The father told police that Bowman was recently acquitted of a DUI charge, allegedly due to mental incompetence, and that he "does whatever he wants and believes he can 'get away with it,'" the report states. He also told police his son "often hit the suspect and (told) him there's nothing he can do."

Bowman was arrested for investigation of abuse of a disabled or elderly person, aggravated assault and domestic violence.

Bowman was charged on June in 3rd District Court with felony DUI. During a hearing on Dec. 23, court records show that Bowman was found to be incompetent to stand trial, that there was a likelihood of his competency being restored, and that Bowman was seeking substance abuse treatment and other rehabilitation. His next court hearing for a competency review is scheduled for March 24.

Bowman was also charged in West Valley Justice Court on Monday with shoplifting, a class B misdemeanor.

His lengthy criminal history also includes convictions for DUI in 2010; failing to stop at the command of a police officer, DUI and unlawful control of a vehicle in three separate incidents all in 2006; drug possession and assault on a police officer in 2000 for which he was sentenced to prison; and DUI in 1996, according to Utah state court records.
