SALT LAKE CITY — Athletes are training for the chance to win one of the record number of medals at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games.

There will be 1,300 medals presented to victors at Sochi. Each medal is constructed with care in a process which takes 18 hours for a top jeweler in Moscow to complete.

The medals were designed to reflect the Sochi landscape and heritage of Russia. A transparent polycarbonate patchwork quilt has a mosaic to represent the different ethnic groups of Russia.

Seven special gold medals containing fragments of meteorite will also be awarded. They will be given to athletes competing on Feb. 15, the one year anniversary of a meteorite that exploded over the Russian city Chelyabinsk. More than 1,000 people were injured in the incident.

More information about the Sochi Olympic Games will be posted on ksl.com on Tuesdays and Thursdays as we draw near to the opening ceremonies in 49 days. All Olympic stories can be found at ksl.com/sochi.
