SALT LAKE CITY — All Olympic games are supported by mascots, sometimes alien-esque and others that are cute and cuddly.

For 2014, a polar bear, hare and leopard will represent the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The characters and their designs were chosen through a telephone vote in the country.

Each character comes with a backstory, like the hare who works in her family’s restaurant, a leopard who rescues stranded people and a speed-skating bear.

With only 51 days left until the opening ceremony, KSL.com will be counting down with fun facts about the Sochi Olympic Games. Watch every Tuesday and Thursday for the feature.
