(KSL News) An aggressive pit bull is in the care of veterinarians after police shot and used a Taser on the dog.

Overnight, Salt Lake City narcotics officers served a "no-knock" search warrant at the Candlestick Apartment Complex on 80 E. 7800 South in Midvale.

Police say upon entry to the apartment, officers were attacked by a pit bull.

In self defense the officers shot the dog, but the animal continued to attack, so police deployed a Taser.

The dog survived and is being treated for its injuries. Detective Jeff Bedard, spokesman for the Salt Lake Police Department, said, "It's not something that we enjoy doing, but once and a while it's something that we have to do to protect ourselves and our own safety."

Just a few days ago, Salt Lake City police had to shoot and kill a German shepherd after it bit one of the officers on the leg.

They say two incidents like this in just a few days are very uncommon.
