(KSL News) Utah's first and only Noble Prize winner was honored tonight during a special gala.

University of Utah researcher Mario Capecchi won the Nobel Prize in Medicine last year for his work developing a genetic mechanism in mice that allows researchers to study mutations that cause disease.

Tonight, Senator Orrin Hatch, U of U president Michael Young and many of Dr. Capecchi's friends paid tribute to him. Dr. Capecchi says this night wasn't just about him, it was also about the University.

"I think it's excellent. We've reached a level of excellence that people would not anticipate. And it shows the support of the community as well as the University has for basic research," he said.

Capecchi also recognized many high school students who attended tonight.
