Becky Bruce reportingInterest is higher than ever in earthquake coverage among Utahns but very few of us actually have it.
Even though the Wasatch Fault is in our backyard, State Director of Life and Property Casualty Insurance Brad Tibbitts says only about 15 percent of homeowners who buy insurance have earthquake coverage.
He says, "Earthquakes are so few and far between people don't see that as a real peril here in this area, even though we have had warnings for a number of years."
Utah's Department of Insurance has already done some of your homework. They've calculated the average cost of earthquake coverage for you on their Web site. It's $7.16 per thousand dollars of assessed value on a brick house and $1.52 for a frame structure.
