Alex Cabrero and Marc Giauque reportingA standoff ends violently in Salt Lake City.

Police say it wasn't the ending they wanted. It happened after two hours of negotiation with a man who told probation officers he wasn't going back to prison.

The standoff started around 1 p.m. near 900 East and 100 South. Officers from Adult Probation and Parole went the apartment to serve a warrant. The man was wanted on a parole violation.

Detective Jared Wihongi, spokesman for the Salt Lake Police Department said, "At one point we lost contact with him. Our negotiators heard what they perceived to be a gunshot inside the residence."

A camera was sent into the apartment to try and figure out what was going on, and that's when they discovered that the 45-year-old man had shot himself and taken his own life.

The standoff closed 900 East between 100 South and 200 South for several hours and forced the evacuation of several apartments.
