Dina Freedman ReportingWe're not in a drought right now across much of the state, but it's never too early to think about conserving water.

As it gets warmer and everyone is thinking about keeping their flowers and grass nice and bright, it's still important to think about water conservation. No rain is in the forecast in our immediate future, and although we had a banner year for northern snow, we can't forget that we should always be trying to save water.

Water Conservation Wise Despite Good Water Year

Watering between 10 am to 6 pm isn't the wisest idea, we saw a lot of that today. It doesn't use the water efficiently and if it's windy, like it was today, the water just ends up blowing in your neighbor's lawn instead.

Watering in cycles may also be key. Instead of watering for a straight 20 minutes, break that 20 into sets of 7 or 6 and water for those increments every hour.

Stephanie Duer, Water Conservation Coordinator: "The simplest is to not operate your irrigation system, your lawn watering by a calendar, do it by the plants need. One way to check is with the screw driver, another easy way is just the appearance of the lawn; if it looks a little silvery or if you leave footprints behind as you walk, that's a good time to water."

One way to check on your lawn and see if it's ready for watering is by using a screw driver. Just stick it in the ground, if it goes through easily and all the way, then the soil is moist. But if it only goes in about an inch, then it's time to water.
