LAYTON, Utah (AP) -- With a Jan. 31 deadline looming, officials in Weber and Davis counties remain locked in a stalemate with the Utah Transportation Authority over a proposed tax hike.
UTA asked every county it serves to impose a supplemental transportation tax of 0.05 percent to make up for revenue losses suffered when Utah lawmakers removed the sales tax on nonprepared food.
Weber and Davis counties refused. The tax would add five cents to a $10 purchase.
UTA says it will cut services in both counties if an agreement isn't reached. On the chopping block are express bus services and paratransit routes for the disabled.
County officials say they aren't convinced the tax is necessary.
