Randall Jeppesen reporting The Salt Lake City Council is expected to decide this week whether to ban people from building along the banks of streams and rivers.
Right now, there's a temporary ordinance that says you can't build or develop the land directly along Salt Lake City streams and rivers, but that will soon expire, and the city council could vote Tuesday on a permanent ban.
"This is something that's been long overdue," said Councilman J.T. Martin. He also wants to protect the quality of the water.
But what about those who own land around the streams, like Lindsay Christensen? "I'm actually for it. Even though it would affect my property, I see the benefits of protecting the streams," she said.
But others say this is just the government trying to tell them what they can and cannot do with their property.
